::

This week on the show, things got a

2

::

little bit complicated for Tog Chesterfield with a

3

::

flock of Junkos, all because of vegan jerky.

4

::

You're with Tog Chesterfield on 101.7 FM

5

::

The Grack.

6

::

I'm trying to pick up the pieces and

7

::

fix up my life after I hit rock

8

::

bottom, and I'm taking you along as I

9

::

try new things and attempt to embrace life.

10

::

I'm Fuck Your Life with Tog Chesterfield.

11

::

Welcome to the show.

12

::

Right now it's 5.02 PM.

13

::

I'll be with you here for your commute,

14

::

or while you prepare your dinner, or while

15

::

you wait to pick up your kid around

16

::

the corner from their best friend's house because

17

::

they're kind of embarrassed by your vehicle.

18

::

I'm your uninvited guest for the evening, or

19

::

invited if you chose to dial in to

20

::

101.7 FM, I guess.

21

::

So tonight I'll be letting all of you

22

::

in on a little debacle I had with

23

::

my latest foray into solopreneurship after I lost

24

::

my job.

25

::

I'm still making food in this one, but

26

::

this time I'm making vegan jerky.

27

::

But that debacle ended up getting myself a

28

::

new roommate, so it wasn't so bad in

29

::

the end.

30

::

But how did it all start?

31

::

Well, I've been going to bulk bins to

32

::

save money on food, but my dinners had

33

::

been getting a little bit boring, as I

34

::

let you know about in an earlier show.

35

::

So I was there looking at some of

36

::

the vegan jerky they had at bulk bins,

37

::

but it was pretty expensive because it was

38

::

all surprisingly artisanal.

39

::

Is it artisanal?

40

::

Yeah, artisanal.

41

::

Hey Dan, I'm wondering if we could maybe

42

::

make a deal on this artichoke dandelion vegan

43

::

jerky?

44

::

If I maybe bought a lot of it,

45

::

or if I did a bin wipe down

46

::

or something?

47

::

Yeah, no bartering on the artichoke dandelion jerky.

48

::

How about some of the lavender gooseberry nutritional

49

::

yeast vegan jerky?

50

::

Or a wipe down?

51

::

Yeah, no bartering on the lavender gooseberry nutritional

52

::

yeast jerky.

53

::

The, uh, sunchoke ginger and cardamom jerky?

54

::

Or a wipe down?

55

::

Yeah, no bartering on the sunchoke ginger and

56

::

cardamom jerky.

57

::

It turns out that every flavor, and there

58

::

were 15 of them, I asked about all

59

::

of them, they were all already at cost.

60

::

So there was no bartering, and I didn't

61

::

get to do a wipe down of the

62

::

bins either.

63

::

And Dan ended up putting up a sign

64

::

that week since I wasn't the first one

65

::

to try bartering at bulk bins for jerky.

66

::

And some guy came in with a chamois

67

::

every Wednesday to have a go at the

68

::

bins in aisle three without asking at all.

69

::

I didn't realize I'd walked into something kind

70

::

of weird, and I was, well, now I

71

::

was part of the problem too.

72

::

But I looked at the ingredients label, and

73

::

it was all things I could get there

74

::

at bulk bins, and I thought, well, why

75

::

don't I try making this myself?

76

::

Especially now that my sourdough incident was becoming

77

::

old news.

78

::

I really wanted to be, you know, so

79

::

creative as people do on the internet and

80

::

give it my own spin.

81

::

But I had learned my lesson on that

82

::

with the sourdough, so I decided this time

83

::

to be cautiously creative because I'm, well, I

84

::

believe that being creative, it would really help

85

::

with the depression that had set in once

86

::

I hit rock bottom.

87

::

I think that being creative can kind of

88

::

be helpful if you're depressed.

89

::

There isn't a whole lot of conclusive evidence

90

::

that being depressed as a human makes you

91

::

more creative.

92

::

I mean, I looked because I was hoping

93

::

maybe that would be true.

94

::

But every time I, I try to be

95

::

creative, the main thing is, is it makes

96

::

me feel kind of like doing something new

97

::

with my hands and using my, you know,

98

::

kind of damaged mind.

99

::

It made me feel a bit better.

100

::

It's like I could communicate with others without

101

::

needing to think of the proper words to

102

::

use when I wasn't feeling well.

103

::

I didn't have to rely on my non

104

::

-dependable mind to talk to other people, but

105

::

I could still connect with people through the

106

::

thing that I'd made.

107

::

And that's kind of neat.

108

::

Something I wanted to try again to get

109

::

myself out of rock bottom.

110

::

So, so I set out to make my

111

::

own TOG version of vegan jerky.

112

::

But first, let's take a quick break.

113

::

I'm Tog Chesterfield here on 101.7 The

114

::

Grack, and this is Un-Fuck Your Life

115

::

with, well, Tog Chesterfield.

116

::

Un-Fuck Your Life with Tog Chesterfield.

117

::

Back to the show.

118

::

So I figured out a fantastic recipe that

119

::

I could make on my own and in

120

::

my oven.

121

::

And it didn't stink up anything while it

122

::

was dehydrated in there.

123

::

I used king oyster mushrooms.

124

::

I used some vital wheat gluten.

125

::

I used nutritional yeast, of course.

126

::

I used sunflower seeds and, oh, just a

127

::

bunch of good spices, including that cardamom.

128

::

I liked the sound of that idea from

129

::

bulk bins.

130

::

But I needed a big old dehydrator to

131

::

make it into my new job because, you

132

::

know, you gotta make a lot of it

133

::

if you're gonna, you know, do it as

134

::

a business.

135

::

And since I didn't have much of my

136

::

own money anymore, it got mostly dried up

137

::

again after the sourdough incident I told you

138

::

about last week.

139

::

I went to the Grackleton Classifieds online and

140

::

looked up dehydrators there.

141

::

And lo and behold, I found one that

142

::

looked like somebody had made it themselves with

143

::

their own hands and they were giving it

144

::

away for free.

145

::

I just had to move it myself.

146

::

Luckily, I still had my Ford Transit van

147

::

with enough gas to make it to the

148

::

seller's house and back.

149

::

Actually, that seller is now my latest roommate,

150

::

Joe Roost.

151

::

You might remember Eaton from the last show.

152

::

Well, they discovered that they were allergic to

153

::

potato skin and had to move out.

154

::

I just have too much of it in

155

::

this place, I guess.

156

::

But now Joe has taken over my old

157

::

office.

158

::

And Joe's really nice.

159

::

And they showed me how to use the

160

::

dehydrator and set it up in the kitchen

161

::

too.

162

::

I made some test batches and I started

163

::

selling them at bulk bins and a coffee

164

::

shop nearby.

165

::

And people really seemed to like them.

166

::

And I got reorders within the week.

167

::

So I, you know, started making it for

168

::

real.

169

::

But things, well, things quickly went downhill.

170

::

You see, I was storing the big bags

171

::

of sunflower seeds on my balcony, next to

172

::

the scarecrow, Burl Booch.

173

::

But you see, birds are smart, especially the

174

::

local juncos.

175

::

And they, the juncos, and a few other

176

::

types of birds, including grackles, of course, they,

177

::

well, they all flocked to the balcony.

178

::

They told each other and more came and

179

::

more came.

180

::

And all of them got into the sacks

181

::

of seeds there.

182

::

They flew right around Burl.

183

::

Burl didn't work as a scarecrow at all.

184

::

And they ate every single sack I had

185

::

out there.

186

::

And you see, well, the problem was the

187

::

HOA president, Lewis Pepperoni.

188

::ewis parks his custom painted:

189

::

the same kind of car as the mayor,

190

::

because they're part of some super appreciation club.

191

::

Well, he parks it outside my townhouse.

192

::

The birds, well, they got his Supra real

193

::

good with their poop.

194

::

So I ended up needing to write another

195

::

apology letter to Lewis.

196

::

Dear Lewis Pepperoni, I'm sorry I attracted the

197

::

junco birds who defecated upon your Toyota Supra's

198

::

custom paint job.

199

::

The car was very nice.

200

::

As is your dog, Pepperoni.

201

::

Tog Chesterfield.

202

::

I also had to write an apology letter

203

::

to the Supra Appreciation Club.

204

::

And read it at their annual summer picnic

205

::

gathering.

206

::

Yeah, now we have a quick statement from

207

::

Tog Chesterfield, who joins our gathering in their...

208

::

What the...

209

::

What the hell is that thing?

210

::Their:

211

::

Okay, Tog.

212

::

Thank you.

213

::

Dear East Grackleton Chapter of the Toyota Supra

214

::

Appreciation Club, Thank you for having me here

215

::

today.

216

::

I want to apologize to the Supra enthusiasts

217

::

about the increase in the local junco population

218

::

due to my improper...

219

::

And uncouth!

220

::

Sure, uncouth storage of sunflower seeds on my

221

::

balcony.

222

::

Supras are very nice.

223

::

Tog Chesterfield.

224

::

The Appreciation Club voted to disallow my new

225

::

vegan jerky to be sold within Grackleton town

226

::

limits in the best interest of the local

227

::

Supra owners.

228

::

And that made it into, you know, Grackleton

229

::

town law because the mayor is part of

230

::

the club.

231

::

Oh, it's time for the weather.

232

::

Tonight's weather for your drive at five with

233

::

Unfuck Your Life is brought to you by

234

::

Cora's Cup Coasters, the home of the most

235

::

decorative and custom coasters for your favorite hot

236

::

or cold beverages in Grackleton.

237

::

Get ready for the weather.

238

::

Tonight, Grackleton is expecting a high pressure system

239

::

to arrive tonight, bringing with it abundantly cool

240

::

and dry air.

241

::

This means it's time for you to grab

242

::

your chapstick and hydrate those lips of yours.

243

::

You just learned all about the weather.

244

::

And that's it for the weather on your

245

::

drive at five from Cora's Coasters.

246

::

Considering call- consider calling Cora's Coasters for

247

::

your next custom coast- wait.

248

::

Consider calling Cora's Coasters for your next custom

249

::

cup coaster req- Consider Cora- consider

250

::

calling Cora's Coasters for your next custom cup

251

::

coaster req- Damn it, what the-

252

::

who wrote this?

253

::

Consider calling Cora's Coasters for your next custom

254

::

cup coaster requisition.

255

::

Thank you.

256

::

I fuck your life with Todd Chesterfield.

257

::

So my vegan jerky journey ended before it

258

::

really began.

259

::

I managed to get some first batches out

260

::

before the birds took over my balcony and

261

::

ruined Lewis's custom paint job.

262

::

And the reviews were pretty good.

263

::

Indeed, for someone who is new to the

264

::

vegan jerky biz, I think.

265

::

I thought about taking things online, maybe, and

266

::

shipping the jerky to people outside of town

267

::

limits.

268

::

But I was really looking for some local

269

::

connection instead.

270

::

Honestly, though, I was also looking for simplicity.

271

::

Slowing down.

272

::

Our lives have really become so busy and

273

::

disconnected.

274

::

We're so stuck on our phones and getting

275

::

things done and being busy.

276

::

Usually alone and really disconnected.

277

::

And then if you want to sell something

278

::

on the web, like jerky, we need to

279

::

be five different people.

280

::

You're the jerky maker, and the packager, and

281

::

the web builder, and graphics, and the social

282

::

media-er.

283

::

Oh, that part.

284

::

I know that's what I did at Apocalypse

285

::

.cloud. And the payment gateways person, and shipping,

286

::

and customer service, and gosh knows what else.

287

::

That's more than five things.

288

::

And you're still pretty disconnected, despite all of

289

::

it.

290

::

But I know Grackleton.

291

::

I've lived here my whole life, almost.

292

::

And I know that even though Grackleton is

293

::

small, and we have our funny ways here,

294

::

I know those funny ways.

295

::

And I can understand them.

296

::

And I can put up with them, too.

297

::

And I can put jerky right in people's

298

::

hands.

299

::

And I can tell them how it's made,

300

::

and who made it.

301

::

And they know that it's made by someone

302

::

here.

303

::

That they might kind of know, if I'm

304

::

the one telling them, at least.

305

::

It connects me to the place I live,

306

::

though.

307

::

The Supra Appreciation Club ended up coming over

308

::

to clean Lewis's Supra from the junco poop.

309

::

And then they came over and cleaned up

310

::

my balcony, and left me all the leftovers

311

::

from the picnic, because they knew that I

312

::

needed some food.

313

::

Community care and love might not happen all

314

::

that often, but when it does, it sure

315

::

makes a difference.

316

::

And simplicity works pretty well in a world

317

::

that's changing so rapidly, in really confusing and

318

::

scary ways.

319

::

When I set out on the path to

320

::

get out of such a bad place, this

321

::

rock bottom, I knew it was a place

322

::

I didn't want to be anymore.

323

::

And I knew that I had to do

324

::

this thing here, with the people that I

325

::

knew, in the place that I knew.

326

::

Even if I felt sometimes like it maybe

327

::

didn't have my back in its weird ways,

328

::

I knew that I could trust myself to

329

::

find a way and find people here in

330

::

Grackleton to- Oh, sorry, Tog!

331

::

It's Joe!

332

::

Joe Roost of Dehydrator Fape!

333

::

Oh, yeah!

334

::

Hi, Joe!

335

::

Of course!

336

::

Of course!

337

::

Hang on!

338

::

So I just got back with a few

339

::

groceries to put in the fridge.

340

::

I just saw that sign that I can

341

::

have half the fridge.

342

::

I was thinking of taking the back half

343

::

of the fridge, and I just wanted to

344

::

run that by you just in case, because

345

::

I know it's probably not super anticipated, like

346

::

probably not the first thing that you're thinking,

347

::

right?

348

::

Oh, yeah, no, that's probably not what I

349

::

would have- I wouldn't have guessed that.

350

::

Yeah, well, yeah, yeah, you see, I'm a

351

::

Jenga enthusiast, by the way.

352

::

Do you think that you might want to

353

::

do a round of that tonight?

354

::

You see, I'm a Jenga enthusiast, so that's

355

::

why I like the back half of the

356

::

fridge, the back half.

357

::

Yeah, because I can kind of like-

358

::

It helps, it helps, especially with big items

359

::

like a carton of oat milk or something.

360

::

Anyways, yeah, do you maybe want to do

361

::

a round of Jenga tonight, you and me,

362

::

after you're done your show here?

363

::

Oh, wait, wait, are you doing a show

364

::

right now, hon?

365

::

Am I on the air?

366

::

Am I going to be famous?

367

::

Yeah, actually, yeah, actually, you are, Jo, you

368

::

are on the air.

369

::

You might be famous.

370

::

Do you want me to move all those

371

::

potatoes?

372

::

They're kind of in the way.

373

::

Oh, so yeah, but I'll be down soon.

374

::

I'll help.

375

::

I'll move my stuff to the front half

376

::

then.

377

::

So that's it for this week's episode of

378

::

the show here on 101.7 FM The

379

::

Graph.

380

::

Stay tuned for Lonnie's lawn report at six

381

::

about the new grass height regulations that just

382

::

passed Grackleton's Town Hall, because I heard that

383

::

this report might get a little heated.
